Can I take a camera tripod on a plane as part of my carry on luggage?

I was not sure if this little hunk of aluminum would be considered “dangerous”.
Thanks in advance,
Jon

  1. The airport website should have a list of things that are considered as dangerous to take as carry on. My guess is a tripod shouldn’t be dangerous, just make sure the dimensions don’t exceed the limit for a carry on item.

  2. No. Anything that can be used as a club or bat is not permitted by TSA.

  3. Tripods are not mentioned anywhere on the TSA website, so it is hard to provide an completely accurate answer.

You cannot bring into the cabin things like baseball bats, hockey sticks, lacrosse sticks, and other club-like items. It may be that a tripod would fall into the same category.

Best advice is to pack it in a checked bag, if you are taking one, or leave it behind.

You may be able to get an answer by contacting the TSA:
    Phone: 1-866-289-9673
    E-mail: TSA-ContactCenter@dhs. gov

  4. I’ve been carrying my Manfrotto Modo 785B on many national and international flights. Is always attached to my camera back-pack and never had any issue with TSA. (…knock on wood they don’t change their minds suddendly)

  5. I just spoke with someone at the TSA on the phone, and I was told that tripods are up to the discretion of the security personnel at the screening gate. Heavy metal or non-collapsable tripods are definitely NOT allowed, she said, while light-weight collapsable tripods will probably be allowed through, but she was careful to say that there are no guarantees. It may be possible to call the airport you are departing from and get a better feel for how strict they are at the time you are traveling.
