The cruising speed for a Boeing 737 is 550 mph, and this is your average passenger plane. They can reach speeds of up to 665 mph but this is almost never used. I had one experience where we were forced to go 665 mph because of passenger illness, it was from Las Vegas to Cleveland, ATC decided ot was best not to make an emergency landing. This is a very rare situation however, and most do not exceed 560 mph.
For an average passenger plane, you’d be looking at 500-600 mph, but 600 is on the heigher end… Also, if you travel 658mph, at 35,000 feet, you are moving faster than sound. =]
about 520 mph for an average passenger jet (more than 100 passengers) I think but you can look up specific stats on the manufacturers website (ex: boeing.com, airbus.com)
The Russian built Tu-144 is the fastest passenger aircraft with a maximum speed of Mach 2.35.
