How Would I Take A Large, Expensive Item On An Airplane? It’s Too Large To Carry, Too Fragile To Check?

I’m writing a story about a cellist. He needs to take a plane trip, and I need to know, how would you take a cello on a plane ride? It’d be too fragile and expensive to risk checking it with regular luggage (wouldn’t it), but too large to carry on. What would an airline do about that situatio Any airline employees/luggage checkers out there? Help me out!

  1. You have to buy it a seat. My husband wanted to take his guitar when he was on work travel for 9 months but didn’t want to check it. Needless to say he didn’t take it….he learned to play the flute while traveling instead.

  2. I was on a plane once and saw a guy with a cello and he had another seat for it next to him.

  3. AIR FREIGHT IT TO YOUR DESTINATION !!!
    MARK HIGHLY FRAGILE !!!
ADD INSURANCE TO ASSURE ARRIVAL !!!

  4. The honest answer is that you have no choice but to put it in the hold. Musicians complain about this all the time because the hold is not temperature controlled and is much cooler than the cabin during flight. So your instrument will therefore warp slightly. Keep on complaining and one day the airlines will listen to musicians.
