you have not specified whether you are travelling domestic or international. rules differ slightly, depending on this.
however, generally you are allowed a piece of hand-baggage (the size and weight specifications can be found in the website of the carrier/ on the ticket). generally you can carry some emergency and expensive articles. you are not allowed, legally, to carryfood or drinks… the officials may let you take some half-eaten chocolate bar sometimes, but that is NOT the rule… best is to avoid carriyng things which you don’t need immediately, in-flight. no cosmetics, please, and no fluid articles… like lotions, or gels…

Visit the TSA website for all the information that you need to know as to what is allowed and not allowed. You may also want to check on the airlines website to see if there is a weight limit for your carry on baggage. It varies slightly from airline to airline, and some strictly enforce it other don’t.
