Can You Bring Your Guitar On The Airplane As A Carry-on?



I don’t know if I trust to check it in. Any suggestions?

  1. Not unless it is very small. It has to fit in the overhead compartment or under a seat. A standard guitar will definitely not fit under a seat and probably won’t fit in an overhead compartment. It has no hope of making it on a regional jet or a propeller plane.
    If you try to take it on and it doesn’t fit, the airline will take it from you and put it in the luggage compartment.
    I would not check it. It could be damaged or stolen. You may be better off to box it up carefully and ship it separately. UPS Ground or a similar service may not be that expensive and you can insure it against damage.

  2. In the last couple of months of my travel I have seen half a dozen people who carry-on their guitars / other instruments. Overhead compartments – at least on SW Airlines – accomodate them fine.
