Airline Carry On Rules

I read the carry-on baggage regulations on continental.com (http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/content/travel/baggage/carry-on.aspx) and I got confused…
it says that I can have one carry-on and 1 personal item, then it list what kind of personal item I can bring…
Does this mean that I have to choose between carrying my digital camera, mp3 player, and laptop?
At first, I planned to have one carry on-baggage, like a bookbag and have my laptop, mp3 player, and digital camera in there….so what should I do now?
Also if I bring my laptop, does that mean I have to take it out to let it be scan by the x-ray machine itself? (same thing for the 3oz toiletries?)

BTW, I’m traveling from Newark, NJ (EWR) to Hong Kong (HKG) (it’s about a 15 hour flight >.<)
