i will be traveling to mexico from the u.s. and this is the first time i have ever traveled on an airplane. what are some carry-on do’s and dont’s? will it be ok to bring my laptop onboard?

Each airline has different rules (though they are all very similar) so I would recommend checking the website for your particular airline where they’ll have all sorts of information telling you exactly what you may bring onboard, how big your bag can be, what items are prohibited, etc.
You’re laptop should be fine, by the way.
