This changes frequently, so I would double check with your airline. When we flew mid February, we could take small sizes of lotions, etc (3 oz or less, with all of them together in a clear ziplock bag), which was different from when we flew in January, which was different from when we flew in December. If we are staying in a hotel, we place all that kind of stuff, as well as nail clippers, etc in checked baggage (as if it gets misplaced by the airlines, the hotel has shampoo etc). We pack a change of clothes, pajamas, swimsuit, medications, a book in our carry-on.

Here’s the US Transportation Security Administration’s website with their list of permitted and prohibited items: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/p…
If you’re traveling into or out of the UK the restrictions are slightly different… metric for one thing, and 100ml bottles (3.4 oz instead of 3 oz in a one liter bag 20cm x 20cm (8″ x 8″) instead on one quart 8″ x 7.75″). Check the British Airways website: http://baa.com/ If you’re traveling in the US, I’d go with the smaller size bottles, but the metric size bag should be OK.
