Airline Carry On, How Exact Is Sizing?

Hello,
I’m looking at getting a new rolling carry on bag and think i’ve found the exact bag with all the features and such that I want. However, it is technically too big. I usually fly on united as they’re one of the only airlines that fly out of my home town and they have a maximum restriction of 45 linear inches for a carry on bag. My problem is the bag that I want is 46.5 linear inches.
So my question is would this present me with any problems? Or is it “close enough”? Anyone with any experience with a bag that’s just slighly over the size limits?
Thanks.

  1. Airlines have been quite ridiculous when it comes to baggage. I would contact not only United but your local airport as sometimes regulation vary from month to month. If one agent thinks its even a fraction larger than is allowed they will make you check it.

  2. I don’t see how that would be a problem. i have noticed larger bags than that. and what is 1.5 linear inches going to do.
